Energy Commission certifies electricians and wiring inspectors for the Northern Region

About 783 electricians and wiring inspectors have been certified by the Energy Commission to undertake proper electrical wiring and installations in line with safety standard in the Northern Region.

They were trained and tested under the Electrical Wiring Certification Programmed which was introduced years ago by Energy Commission to ensure that licensed electricians used standard and quality materials for wiring.

The programmed is under the Electrical Wiring Regulation 2011(LI)20018, which enjoins every electrician to undertake a written examination conducted by the Energy Commission to assess competencies in the field of work

A programme officer at the Energy Commission, Stephen Yomoh, who made this known at the 11th Electrical Wiring certificate award presentation ceremony in Tamale, said domestic, commercial, and industrial electricians as well as inspectors had been certified.

He added that out of the 1,055  who registered and sat for various categories of the Nov/ Dec 2018 electrical examination, 783 passed out in the region, he mention 396 are in the domestic electrical wiring class, 317 are in the commercial electrical wiring class, 51 are in the industrial wiring ,and 19 are inspectors.

Speaking to Diamond News after presenting the certificate to the various candidates, Stephen Yomoh who doubles as lead officer at the Energy commission said the Electrical Wiring Regulation enjoined facility owners to engage the services of only certified electricians and certified electrical materials for wiring installations.

He said the law also sought to protect life and property by ensuring that electricians avoided shoddy electrical wiring to avoid fire outbreaks.

The area manager of Northern electricity distribution company, NEDco, John Okai Yamoah, in his statement caution the graduates to desist from becoming a meters agent at the VRA offices, he also asked them to also abide by the rules of energy commission by sticking to the approved fees of the commission and desist from demanding extra money from the clients, saying management of NEDco will resist any high fees from certified electricians in the region
