EC Registration Officers Nabbed for wrong-doing

Information reaching Diamond News indicates that two Electoral Commission (EC) officers Mumuni Abilla Yussif 26 a data entry officer, and Mohammed Yushaw Kongsoha 32 a registration officer at the Kpanshegu cluster in the North East Gonja District of the Savanna Region have been arrested.

According to the Northern Regional Crime Officer, Supt. Otuo Acheampong, the two suspects were handed over to the police for illegally registering people in a private resident at Vittin a suburb of the Tamale Metropolis.

He said the suspects registered 12 persons including ten males and two females in a room at Vittin, which is not a designated center.

Supt. Acheampong indicated that the suspects have been detained at the police custody assisting with investigations.

The Northern Regional secretary of NDC Mohammed Abdul Salam told Diamond News that the two EC officers were stationed at Kpanshegu, a farming community in the North East Gonja District of the Savanna Region for the ongoing voter registration exercise, but found themselves at the Tamale South constituency in the Northern Region for reasons best known to the two of them.

He said the NDC in the region acting upon intelligence led to the arrest of the suspects in a room at Vittin busily registering NPP members in the area. He said the EC in the Savanna Region told political parties that the registration equipment had developed a fault and had been sent to Damongo for maintenance only for the machines to end up in the Tamale South constituency of the Northern Region.

“This particular registration kits had been reported to political parties that, it is dysfunctional and has been sent to Damongo for repairs for subsequent continuation of the registration exercise at the originally designated center in the Kpanshegu of the North East Gonja District only for the machines to end up in Tamale South where people were being registered” he lamented.

The NDC Northern Regional Secretary claimed that the suspects were NPP activists’ who got recruited by the EC for the exercise in the Savanna Region, “their action is in an attempt to rape Ghana’s democracy, because we don’t understand why this machine found itself in the Tamale South constituency

Mohammed Salam urged party executives, polling stations officers and coordinators to be vigilant at the various registration centres across the country accusing the NPP of plotting schemes to register foreigners in the ongoing voters register exercise.

“This is not happening here alone, what we have seen here today is a sign that the NPP is carrying such acts in other regions and it’s only through vigilant and monitoring that can stop them so we must not allow the NPP again to cheat the system.”

He said the NDC would ensure that the suspects will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others. He has however warned that they will not hesitate to name and shame any person who has intentions of   rescuing the suspects.
