December 17 referendum is needless and waste of state resources, Samson Lardy.

Private legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini has called on the Electoral Commission to call off the referendum slated for December 17, 2019 since in his view it is needless and waste of scarce state resources.

According to him, the desire by Ghanaians to elect their local representatives including Metro, Municipal and District Chief Executives has nothing to do with Article 55(3) which requires an amendment through a referendum.

If it’s called off that’s fine because its waste of money, we don’t need it. We want to elect our MMDCEs, article 55(3) has nothing to do with election of MMDCEs, why are you wasting our money ?

He proposed that, government should rather channel the resources meant for the referendum into resourcing the Unite committee members, Assembly members and the District Assemblies to enable them effectively carry out their mandate.

Speaking to Diamond News in an interview, Samson Lardy argued that, voting YES in the referendum will rather give more power to the political parties to control all sectors of the governance and that will deny many people without political colors the opportunity to serve.

The legal practitioner cum broadcaster also indicated that, voting YES in the referendum will rather worsen the division on party lines and parochial partisan interest at all levels to the detriment of larger populace.

On the 17th of December, ask yourself whether you want your community to suffer the divisions and the pity parochial partisan interest that is dragging this country down.

He also revealed that, the winner takes all syndromes as it is in the Ghanaian politics will deteriorate and that will also make persons in office at the local level more unaccountable to the citizenry at the grassroots.

If you vote YES you’re rather now bringing winner takes all to the Assembly level because parties will contest and the winner will take all and a Chief will be more comfortable to deal with a DCE, Assembly member or Unit committee member who is not openly associated with one party or the other because they (Chiefs) don’t want people to think that because they are engaging with this DCE or Assembly member he is NDC or NPP”.

The host of the News File program on multimedia also expressed worries at what he described as a deliberate attempt by some persons to misinform the general public that the referendum is about the election of MMDCEs.
