Black Stars Make Light Work of Glow Lamp Academy

The Black Stars of Ghana defeated academy boys Glow Lamp Academy 5-1 in a low-key friendly match played at the Cape Coast stadium on Thursday ahead of the final 2018 World Cup qualifier against Egypt on Sunday.

Coach Kwesi Appiah’s charges demonstrated great determination and it is expected that they will replicate it against the Pharaohs of Egypt to claim victory.

In-form striker Richmond Boakye-Yiadom scored first before Tunisia-based defender Nicholas Opoku doubled the lead with a brilliant header but the Academy boys grabbed a goal before halftime.

Then Depotivo Alaves midfielder Mukarak Wakaso converted a spot-kick in the second half to make it 3-1 before goals from Raphael Dwamena and left-back Lumor Agbenyenu wrapped up the victory.

Eventhough captain Asamoah Gyan was not part of the game alongside compatriot Christian Atsu due to thigh injuries, the Kayserispor striker took time to call on his team mates to work hard for victory on Sunday for the sake of pride.

The Black Stars will clash with the Pharoahs of Egypt on Sunday with nothing but pride to play for after the North Africans secured the only qualification slot in Group E to the global showpiece last month.

Elsewhere, Ghana’s Andre Dede Ayew’s excellent strike against Crystal Palace has been adjudged the Goal of the Month in the English Premier League.

The Ghana international’s breathtaking goal surpassed Philippe Coutinho’s goal against Newcastle United, Jamie Vardy’s strike against Leicester City, Pedro’s goal for Chelsea against Watford as well as Sofiane Boufal’s solo effort in Southampton’s defeated to West Bromwich Albion.

Ayew took on his marker and fired the ball into the top corner of the post in a game West Ham drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace at the Selhurst Park.
