BLACK QUEENS DRAWN AGAINST CAMEROON IN AWCON

The senior female national team, the Black Queens have been drawn against Cameroon in Group A of the Total African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) 2018 to be hosted in Ghana from 17th November to 1st December, 2018.

The draw for the final tournament of the AWCON took place in Accra on Sunday 21st October, 2018 with CAF president Ahmad Ahmad in attendance. The draw itself saw Ghana placed in group A as host alongside Cameroon, Algeria and Mali.

The Queens are bidding for a host and win mantra and if that is going to materialize they must fend off competition from the teams in their group.

The other group which is group B has African powerhouse in women football, Nigeria who are record seven time winners of the competition. Nigeria will face the likes of South Africa, Zambia and Kenya.

The eight team tournament will see the group winners and their runner-ups qualifying into the semi-final to battle for a place in the final on 1st December, 2018.

Coach Bashir Hayford’s team went on a nationwide tour last month to whip up support and enthusiasm among fans ahead of the competition. They played a series of friendlies before later returning to the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram.

The black queens are aiming to blend foreign based players alongside local players to engineer a host ad win. The team has had a long drought to lay their hands on the highest football prize in women football on the continent.
