Nalerigu Named New North East Regional Capital


President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 presented the Constitutional Instrument (CI) on the creation of six new Regions at the Jubilee House.

The creation of the new Regions, according to government, will be a major boost to the development of Ghana’s economy.

The President earlier today presented the Constitutional Instrument to the people of North East Region.

He has named the Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed to be the caretaker Minister of the new Region till the appointment of a substantive Minister.

Nalerigu has also been chosen as the capital of the North East Region, President Akufo-Addo noted during the presentation ceremony at the Jubilee House.

” . . Nalerigu has been chosen as the capital of the North East Region. I want to assure residents of the Region, however, that Government projects and structures will be equitablly spread across the Region,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He also assured the residents of the new Region that government projects and structures will be equitably shared across the Region.

“The North East is the bread basket of the Northern Region and one of the biggest suppliers of food to the entire country and it is only appropriate that we help facilitate its rapid,” he added.

Nalerigu is the largest town in the East Mamprusi Municipal Assembly in the North East region of Ghana.

As well as the traditional capital of the Mamprusi people, the seat of the Paramount Chief the NaYiri.

The North East Region is bordered on the north by the Upper East region, on the east by the eastern Ghana-Togo international border, on the south by the Northern region, and on the west by the Upper West region. North East region is made up of 6 districts.

Presentation of CI’s On New Regions

According to the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, “delegations comprising chiefs and people of the new regions have been invited to the Jubilee House in Accra for the official ceremonies.”

The schedule for presentation is as follows:

Tuesday, 12 February 2019 – North East and Savannah Regions

Wednesday 13 February 2019 – Bono East and Ahafo Regions

Friday, 15 February 2019 – Western North and Oti Regions

The presentation of the CI follows the December 27, 2018 referendum that massively approved the creation of the regions.
